I would describe the figure as relaxed strength!. I always notice that David has very large hands in proportion to the rest of his body!. This emphasizes the figure's strength!. Art is not necessarily supposed to look realistic, but rather the disproportions in the figure tell us how people see the ideal or emphasize a certain characteristic!. Another example of disproportion in a figure is "Birth of Venus" by Sandro Botticelli!. Look at the enormously long and disproportionate arms on Venus!. Botticelli is emphasizing the feminine shape of the figure!.
It has been mentioned that this guy can't be David, because he doesn't look Jewish!. Michelangelo lived during a time when classic Greek art was in vogue, so David looks like a Greek warrior!. This is probably also why David is unclad and standing in a relaxed position!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
