They are in order of importance!. Optics: The better the lens the better the pictures Analog to digital converter Sensor size: The larger the sensor the better the quality!. Mega pixels: More is generally better but only to a point!. To many mega pixels on a small sensor will increase noise!. Now what does all this mean!. The best cameras will have really good lenses!. The best will be SLR's!. For point and shoot cameras they will generally be the ones with the most optical zoom!. The analog to digital converters!. SLR's will have the best!. For point and shoot cameras price is probably your leading indicator!. Sensor size: Digital SLR's have sensors that are about 15 times larger than most point and shoot cameras!. The larger the sensor the better the quality!. This is why a 6mp dslr will have much better image quality than a 10mp point and shoot camera!. When camera companies increase the mega pixels on a camera they don't use a larger sensor!. They just cram more pixels on the same sensor!. This can increase noise or graininess in your prints!.
