Question: What do you think of the Nikon D40!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
a camera body is just a box!.!.!. film, is just as important: Kodak does people and skin tones best, Fuji, does green stuff (trees, outdoor junk) best and AGFA is rich in the cyan tones!. Nikon D40 is a good body, very good as a matter-of-fact, but the lens's and what you choose to do with those makes ALL the difference in the world!.
"For every shoe box of great photos there's an apple crate of junk!.!.!.:" ME
Experiment with the camera and lens's before you buy it!.!.!. if you don't know the answer to the question: "is this good!?"
It sounds like it may be more than you need if you don't know up front!.
Some of my best snaps were taken with a twin lens 120mm Japanese body!.

The D40 can be found easily at a Walmart, but I wouldn't buy it there!. I suggest you go to a place like Ritz Camera at the mall and check out the D60 or D80!. The D60 is a little cheaper and the D80 is a little more, but they'll allow more growth over the years!.

The D80 has backwards compatibility with older Nikon Auto Focus (AF) lenses and is more of a semi-pro camera!. It has an AF motor built into the body so it can power older AF lenses that didn't have their own motor (like newer AF lenes have)!. That allows you to build a greated collection of Nikkor AF lenses and save a lot of money!. Or you can use older Nikkor AF lenses if you've already been collecting them for years, like I have!.

However, if you don't plan on buying older AF lenses or already have them, consider the D60!. It's a great amature camera and it's a little less expensive than the D80 & D40!. It uses all of the newest AF lenses, which have their own AF motor built in!. The D60's body doesn't have an AF motor, so it treats older AF lenses like a manual focus lens!. On both models, you can still use all of the old Nikkor manual focus lenses, for the most part, in the camera's manual mode!. Both D60 & D80 have 10!.2 megapixels!. The D40 has 6!.1!. The D80 has a 11 autofocus points, the D60 & D40 have 3!. The more, the better chances of getting your picture in focus!. The D60 is the newest of the bunch, released in 2008!. It also has an auto dust removal system built in!. I think the D80 will soon be replaced (it was released in 2006) with perhaps a D90 or D80x that'll also have the auto dust removal system and other new features as well!.

I've been researching these myself as I'm interested in picking up a D80!. I have a few of the older AF lenses from the days of film and want a 10+ megapixel!. However, I'm considering holding out for it's replacment, but God knows when that'll be!.

Whatever choice you go with, DSLR can be a lot of fun!. Enjoy your new camera!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Avoid it like a bacterial infection!. It does not have an AF motor and will not grow with you as you expand your photographic talents!.

I would rather see you get a D300, D50, D200, or XTi!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
