home depot sells some canvas dropcloths!. they are about ten by twenty in size for about ten dollars only!. they are a great deal! that is your absolute cheapest way to get material and make quality canvas!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The most expensive part of canvases these days are the stretchers the canvas is mounted on!. I wouldn't worry so much about the fabric!. Most cotton duck canvas is pretty cheap, you can even use burlap if you want!. I wouldn't use previously painted on canvases from thrift stores like suggested previously, mostly because the person who painted on them before may have painted incorrectly and you take the risk that their mistake will make your painting fall apart in 30 years!. With the caveat that I hate to give a huge corporation advertising Dick Blick always has these big quarterly pre-stretched canvas sales!. Sometimes I even buy these and re-stretch these supports with a nicer linen fabric!. If you really want to go cheap and know a good carpenter, have he or she make you stretchers out of 2" x 4"s!.

It all depends on what you are planning to paint on these canvases too!. If you are planning to paint a detailed realistic portrait you should prepare your painting support differently than if you are going to paint an abstract painting!. It is hard to get smooth details from a large tooth fabric so if you choose a wider cheaper canvas try to fill in the tooth of you canvas with your ground (Gesso!.) Keep an eye out for paintings that are being thrown out or sold at garage sales!. Lots of people get rid of their old student work, and you can gesso over it or else use the existing painting as an underpainting!.

You can also pick up picture frames for next to nothing and use them as stretchers for any cloth (which you would then need to prime with gesso before painting)!.

And you can paint on anything, it doesn't have to be canvas! Just prime it first!. If the surface is really slick and it won't take the gesso, sand it firstWww@QuestionHome@Com

Compra madera 2"x4", tela de mahon y corrugado!. Luego que cortes la madera del tama?o que quieras y montes la tela cubre la tela con gesso!. Dale tres manos: la primera de arriba para abajo!. Any cheap fabric dipped in a mixture of glue or paste and water!. The glue will stiffen the fabric then u paint on it!. u can leave the canvas free or nail it to wooden pieces as a frame!. I have many that look great!Www@QuestionHome@Com
