An obvious one would be Anne Frank who did not survive the war but is now a household name due to her diary published after she died!.

My personal favorite would be Kafka who did not have any of his novels published during his lifetime but now they are considered cornerstones of 20th century fiction!.

Painters both Van Gogh and Gaugin!.
