To get a blurred background you must limit your DoF (depth of field)!. To do this you must put your cameras exposure mode into aperture priority and select the largest aperture, which is the smallest f/number!. This is shown in your owners manual!. Typically, to isolate your subject from its background without a fast pro lens, you'll want to be at your longest focal length and widest aperture, that being f/5!.6, at 55mm with your normal zoom or 250mm with your telezoom, and you can achieve fairly decent bokeh at f/5!.6!. Stay around your lenses close focus distance to further take advantage of the isolative nature of a shallow DoF!. Though your lenses are not very fast, you can still get great blur from them up to f/8!. Just experiment and see what you come up with!.

FYI: the quality of the rendering of out-of-focus objects = BLUR!.!.!.

Just FYI bokeh is actually not the blurred bg -- it's the quality of the rendering of out-of-focus objects!.

The blurring is caused by narrow depth of field (DOF)!.

You can provoke it by:

- Opening up the aperture
- Zooming in
- Getting close to your subject

The longer the focal length, the more of this effect you'll get, so use your 55-200!.

Here's a site that lets you calculate DOF in any situation:

Already there are great answers!. Another lens you might want to pick up (and it's cheap) is Canon 50 mm f 1!.8!. It will be a short telephoto for you (as it works like 80 mm lens on your camera, you know, cropped sensor, x 1!.6)!. Here are samples:

Left is at f 1!.8 Right is at f 5!.6

Go to the creative mode, set it on Av (aperture priority) set it at 4!.0 or 5!.6 and the camera will set the shutter speed for proper exposure!. The lower the f/stop number the more blurred the background will be!. (4!.0, 4!.5, 5!.0, 5!.6, 6!.3,7!.1, ect!.!.!.)Www@QuestionHome@Com
