How to draw fish scales and bird feathers?

As for the fish scales, do them in "mass tones", don't paint every scale, look at the fish and paint it one color (the basic color of the fish), then dab in the light, silvery colors here and there where the light hits the scales, and dab in dark areas where the shadows fall. As for feathers, say you want to paint a blue jay. Dab in the basic colors that you see on his breast, wings, crest, then add the lighter colors in the direction that the feathers grow. Only do detail on the major feathers like the tail and the edge of the wings. Again, do NOT try to paint or draw in every feather or scale.
