Question: What song should should I sing for an audition!?
I want to try out for the musical Bye Bye Birdie!. I am an alto but keep in mind I am not a guy XD

It is my first one and I do not really know what to do!. Someone told me I should pick a happy song so I was thinking Popular from Wicked, but I would much rather have something more altoish (I made a word XD)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Track down a copy of "I Could Be Happy With You" from the musical The Boyfriend!. It's not too rangey, so an alto shouldn't have much of a problem with it!. It has a nice, light melody so it'll be appropriate for a Bye Bye Birdie audition!. And the director will appreciate hearing something that isn't so overdone as Wicked!. (It's generally a bad idea to sing anything from a show that's currently on Broadway at an audition!.)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Popular is not a good idea because its too!.!.!.popular!. Besides, the director will compare you to Kirsten Chenoweth, and those are hard shoes to fill!.
Since Bye Bye Birdie is a 50's/60's style show, it would be wise to pick something that sounds similar to that time period, like something from Grease, Jersey Boys, or Hairspray-esq (don't actually sing a song from Hairspary for popularity reasons, but look for something with a similar sound)
also make sure you know your piece well and you don't try to push your voice too far, because being your first audition, you will probably be nervous!. Good Luck!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Some good songs are -

If they could see me now
and
Hey, Big Spender!

from the Broadway, Sweet Charity

Wicked is actually ok!. Elphaba is a mezzo-soprano role so it shouldnt be too high if you can sing soprano!. Of course this is VERY popular at the moment, so the "judges" (omg I cant think of the word!) might think that you dont really have a good knowledge of musical theatre!.

also, Porgy and Bess is always a good fall back if you cant think of anything (Summertime, I loves you Porgy etc)Www@QuestionHome@Com

"The Worst Thing I Could Do" from Grease!. its a good alto songWww@QuestionHome@Com
