Question: Macbeth Question: To what extent are the witches are an essential part of the dramatic action of the play!?
I have to answer this question in an essay and I'm not sure how to approach it!. What exactly is meant by dramatic action!? What angle should i come from!? Any ideas !? Anything would be great!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

i think a good way to approach your problem would be to theorize what the play would be like WITHOUT the witches!. they are the key to the action!. they give all the given info and then forsee the future on top of that!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The witches provide the prophecies that in turn cause Macbeth (or his wife rather) to see that he could become King!. Without the witches Macbeth would have ridden down the road with his buddy and be just one in the line of succession!.

Furthermore, the witches again influence Macbeth by telling him that no man of woman born can kill him!. He becomes ultra confident that he will not die, takes risks he should not, and loses his head to (I think) MacDuff (Macduff was born from a C-section and thus was "not of woman born")!.

Dramatic action is what the heck is going on in the story that we experience as the audience/reader!.
