Question: I'm afraid of overacting!?
I have an audition for the part of Bela in "Lost in Yonkers" tomorrow and it's been a while since I've done theater!. I used to be quite good around a year ago, but now I'm afraid of overacting!. I keep comparing my acting to the Movie acting!. Is that completely ridiculous!? I mean!.!.!.on stage you're meant to to overact a little, right!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

On stage, you have to communicate your energy to a large audience, some of whom will be sitting right at the back!. if you do a realistic neutral undrestated performance, they won't be able to hear or engage with you, hence the reason why The Glass Menagerie does not work in a big space!.

A film camera gets quite an intimate shot!. You've heard about 'making love' to the camera, but in theatre you can't do that to the audience, unless your play is purposely doing that!.

The Tyger is quite a good poem to do, by the way!. It's got a good rhythm and is very visual!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The more you worry about overacting, the more you will overact!

Don't try to act, just be the character - imagine yourself in that situation!. Make sure you know know the lines back to front and inside out!. Once you know the lines to say, have them subconsciously in your mind - don't focus on the lines completely!.

Be natural, if you want, you might want to play up the emotions a little bit - but don't overact if it doesn't feel natural!.

I know nothing about theater, but I would say that you're meant to overact a little on stage!. In movies, you understand the mood of the movie with camera angles, panning and those close up shots where you can really see an actor's expression!. None of this exists in theater, so I'd think you would have to exaggerate the acting just a little bit to get the same emotion!. You'll be great! Good luck!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Do they want you to read a poem or recite one you have memorized!. Will they tell you what to improvise or are to come with something made up!? Just have fun, that is what acting is all about, playing!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Theater is all about overacting, if there is someone all the way up the back they cant define your emotion by a small pathetic little smirk can they whereas movies have like zooms and what not
good luck xxWww@QuestionHome@Com
