40 isn't typically a lot but it really depends!. If you are in private auditions you may never actually know how many other people audition with you!. If its an open call or a cattle call it can be hundreds or even thousands of people!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well, it depends where and what part you are auditioning for!. If you are auditioning for your school play for the lead role, 40 is like above the average amount unless you have a small amount of people capable of trying out!. If you're auditioning for a small part in your school play, 40 is a lot!. If you are auditioning for anything more than a school or small town play, I would imagine 40 being pretty low!.
