Question: Is it better to use an already written monologue or cut and edit dialogue to create a monologue audition!?
I am up for entrance to Juilliard and will also be applying to New York University and SUNY-Purchase College and am preparing for my auditions!. Should I cut and edit dialogue to create a unique monologue or use one that is already written as a monologue!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

NYU alum!.

While doing an original seems a better way to go, and shows a more creative attitude, it would have to be as smooth as a familiar, even if the judges never heard it before!.

More to the point however, might be that you are comfortable with it, get to know it as well as you do your own name, and deliver it as if you had done so a thousand times before, while still making it sound fresh!.

You might also, if you have a chance, try to research what is usually acceptable, and by whom, in all 3 orgs!.

One thing I would suggest is not to use a popular monologue book!. Those monologues will have been done to death!. Anything you can do to look unique and not be compared to a 100 others will serve you well!.

To that end, if you can smoothly cut your own piece out of a play, it will be something that makes you stand out!. Editing is not an easy task though, don't leave it to the last minute!
