There is a pretty good explanation of a fly system on wiki:
http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/Fly_system

Fly space is usually the entire area above the stage in which the fly system operates!.

Some other terms you may want to know:

Fly Rail, or the place where you operate the flies, usually by pulling on ropes and locking them in place with a locking pin of some sort

Batten - the large pipes that move up and down using the fly system

Loading Rail - usually above the stage level - the place from which you load weights onto an arbor to balance the weight of a batten (and whatever is hung on it)

Stage Weight - one of the steel weights used to counterbalance the batten (and whatever is hung on it) - frequently 40 pounds eachWww@QuestionHome@Com

The fly space is the big open space above the stage!. If they've been using the term at your school, then your tech crew has the ability to raise some of your curtains straight up into that big space instead of just opening them into the wings!. Painted backdrops and scrims are often "flown" straight up because they can't be folded!.

Hope that makes sense!Www@QuestionHome@Com
