Question: Which part should I audtition for!?
Well, our school is doing Into the Woods as our musical!. I really want to be in it since I've been doing musical theater for a looong time, and I just love it!. I'm female, 14 and I'm an alto!. I know Into the Woods isn't the greatest musical for us altos, but I'm still going to try!.

So!. My question is: which part should I audtition for!? I'm not looking for like, the Witch or something, because that's far too great a role for the likes of me!. But what would be a good possible role!? And what would be a good audition song for said role!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Taking a slightly closer look at this - what roles are available to you!? I'm assuming this is a high school production, so age doesn't usually factor in as much as it would elsewhere!. also, as far as range goes, Into the Woods isn't as demanding as many others!. It's a very complicated show, musically, but the actual range isn't too extreme!. You might not want to look too close at Cinderella or her mother, depending on how high or low an alto you are, but most of the others, you should be fine!.
That leaves you with most of the female roles in the show, so let's list them (in order of appearance, as best I remember it) with their featured songs in brackets!. Almost everyone sings in the beginning and end of both acts, as well as both Midnight songs, so I won't mention those!.

-Cinderella!. Like I said, might be a little high for you, but a great part, overall!. Everyone knows this character, it's the same girl you've seen in a million movies, except maybe a little more introspective!. [A Very Nice Prince, Steps of the Palace, Your Fault, No One Is Alone]
-Jack's Mother!. Forceful, a bit controlling, with Jack's best interests at heart, although maybe a bit more greedy than she'd like to let on!.
-Baker's Wife!. Knows what she wants, and what she has to do to get it!. Her husband likes to think he's in control, but she knows the real score, and is willing to bend her morality a bit!. [Maybe They're Magic, A Very Nice Prince, It Takes Two, Moments in the Woods]
-Little Red!. A gullible girl with a vicious streak!. [Hello Little Girl, I Know Things Now, Your Fault, No One Is Alone]
-Stepsisters (Florinda and Lucinda)!. You know 'em, you love to hate 'em!.
-Stepmother!. Same Deal!.
-The Witch!. She starts out as a stereotype, but gets some of the best moments in the show!. [Stay With Me, Lament (Children Won't Listen), Last Midnight, Children Will Listen] also, there's an optional song Our Little World that's included in the script!.
-Rapunzel!. Not much to do in the first act, except for a quick bit getting thrown out of the tower (unless you're doing the optional song), but some fun hysterics in the second act!. [Our Little World (maybe)]
-Little Red's Grandmother!. Such a fun character!. One scene, that's full of awesome!.

That oughta cover it, I think, unless I missed one!. Now, on to my actual opinion!. The Baker and Baker's Wife, I think, are the best parts in the show!. They get to show a great emotional range, have some truly amazing songs to sing, and get some of the best jokes out there!. "I suppose it will take the two of us to get this child!." Classic!. I would recommend aiming for this one, you won't regret it!. No matter what you get, though, good luck, it's a wonderful experience to do this show!.

Ayayay, I almost forgot a song recommendation!. Hm!. Anyone Can Whistle's a decent choice (from Anyone Can Whistle, I believe), or possibly Lion Tamer (can't remember the show, but it's by Stephen Schwartz)!. That being said, more than anything else, I would recommend something you're familiar with that shows an emotional range!. It's a really intense show, and while it requires strong singers, it requires strong singers who can act!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Excellent advice from Evan N - all I would add would be to stick with a Sondheim song, from another one of his musicals!. His style is very distinctive, so it's best to stay with his songs!. I've always thought that "The Miller's Son" from A Little Night Music is a great audition song for the Baker's Wife, if you decide to go for that part!Www@QuestionHome@Com

In the first place there are no big and small roles in plays, musicals and dramas!. The only difference in the amount of lines you have to learn!. Always!.!.!.!. always audition for the part you like and feel you can do justice too!. Don't audition for the "big bad wolf", being 14 and female!. If you are already thinking that the role of the witch is to BIG for you, you are belittling yourself and the director will notice!. If you like it go for it!. The director will make up his mind and either tell you: "Don't phone us, we'll phone you" or offer you another part/role!.
Peace!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

honestly, go for the witch!.
i think you'll be surprised !.
i auditioned for a really small part once because i thought i wasnt good enough for anything bigger, and the main part ended up going to a year 7 who wasnt even that good!
trust me, just go for itWww@QuestionHome@Com

Go for the Bakers Wife!. My friend Jennifer played her in our production of it, and she's an alto!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
