Here, without a lecture on the Bard, is the line from his play "Hamlet" that I think answers your question, "To be, or not to be, that is the question!." It is spoken by Hamlet the title character!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It might surprise readers to know that many of Shakespeare's plays, especially in the experimental period were hardly original, borrowing plot features from earlier plays!. Likewise with his history plays, Shakespeare compresses events and does not follow history too closely to add to the drama!. However borrowing plots and taking liberties with historical facts was not uncommon in Shakespeare's time and his skill for language, imagery, pun and his creative adaption of myth and history have set Shakespeare apart as arguably the greatest playwright of all time!.

"To be, or not to be, that is the question, " says Hamlet in the play with the same name!. The line certainly expresses a view of life's challenge, whether WS meant it to be considered his major statement on the subject is, of course, unknowable!. But it's as good an answer as any and better than any other that comes to mind!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
