i disagree!. i think unless otherwise specified, then you can use whatever you think is going to best show off your talent and interpretation as an actor!. i've been to regional cattle calls where they strongly suggest that you only use theatrical monologues but i don't remember ever going to an audition where they flat out told you NOT to use a movie monologue!. they will tell you contemporary or classical or whatever, but if you feel that that monologue shows your talent, then use it!. but you also have to keep in mind of how it's going to look!. i understand theatre doc's advice but i doubt the real world is so set in stone; as a matter of fact, i'm sure it's not!. but you will encounter people/situations (auditioning for schools, regional cattle calls) where people will judge you and hold you accountable for NOT choosing a theatrical monologue!. i personally like using theatrical monologues b/c you get to fill in the blanks unlike a movie where everything is already acted out and you can see it!. that's basically copying!. i like and enjoy the challenge of figuring a script out!.
