Question: Melodrama!.!.!.please help!!?
Hey guys! ok so i take drama at school and this term we have started melodrama!. i find it super hard in the context that i find the characters really hard to well, characterize!. i know that they are just simple - good guy, villan, sidekicks(optional), damzel in distress, father of damzel in distress(optional)!. my teacher really seems to think i have the potential to play the villan a lot but i struggle a lot with all of the characters!. i have taken a liking to being the villians ditzy sidekick but i want to expand my horizons!. can ANYONE give me ANY advice or help on how to really get better at playing all the characters and therefore, become better at the topic!. any help is greatly appreaciated!
p;s can anyone suggest original names(like not used in books or movies) for each character!? especially the villian!.

thank you to whoever answers this! mwah xxWww@QuestionHome@Com

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
I think of the characters in melodrama as 'masks' which the actor puts on to show a certain type of emotion or action ~ virtue, innocence, evil, scheming, etc!.

A good way to get more involved with the characters would be to watch some older movies, not just the very simple silent ones, but some of the more sophisticated melodramas from later years!.

One I really like is 'Witness for the Prosecution', an old black and white film by Alfred Hitchcock!.

The characters are very simple and the plot is incredibly melodramatic ~ but it is much more sophisticated and easier for a modern audience to understand thatn th silent movie type films!.

By watching these and seeing how the 'masks' of good and evil or used to dramatic effect, you can really see how melodrama can create a mood and tell a story in a simple, but powerful way!.
