Lulach!.

"There's something of a "mystery" among students of Macbeth concerning Lady Macbeth's claim to "have given suck!." Macbeth was notoriously childless!. Yet, here is Lady Macbeth saying that she had given birth to a child!. In fact, historically that's exactly what happened and there is no mystery!.

Lady Macbeth had a previous husband and a son!. The son's name was Lulach (Lady Macbeth's name was Gruoch) and he was very much alive during Macbeth's reign!. Shakespeare doesn't mention him, but Scottish king lists do!. Macbeth had no children and, so, made Lulach his heir!. Lulach was King of Scotland for a few months after Macbeth was killed!. Malcolm didn't become King until he killed Lulach!.

It's easy to forget Lulach!. Shakespeare didn't mention him and his reign was short!. Macbeth had a fairly long reign and Malcolm's was even longer!. Malcolm was probably the most important Scottish King between Kenneth MacAlpin (who founded the Scottish monarchy) and Robert the Bruce!. But he is the reason why Lady Macbeth, his mother, could talk about having had a child!."Www@QuestionHome@Com
