to add to the above answers, which are good, I would say on the cast list (or however you will post the list) make yourself available for feedback, like
" If you would like to know why you were not cast in this production, please contact me at______(e-mail)"
Something like that!. I think at the school (high school!?) level there is a responsibility to teach through theater, and giving feedback like that, on what they can improve on, will help everyone!.
Look for talent first, then chemistry second!. it's important to look at how actors are going to work with their fellow actors onstage!. Watch out for any "Diva" attitudes!. If someone is badmouthing another auditionee or acting superior or haughty backstage but pulls out an amazing audition!.!.!. think long and hard whether you want that attitude around for rehersals! :)
Look for people who read well in scenes with others, who try to make eye contact with the person they're reading with!. Signs of nervousness to not necessarily mean lack of talent!. My hands shake when I audition, even though I don't FEEL nervous, but I can still give a good audition!.
I'm sure the teacher will help you out if you get stuck during the casting process!. Maybe make some sort of evaluating scale for yourself!., like how well they did with certain aspects of the audition, from 1-10!. Make lots of notes during the audition so you don't forget anything about what each person did!.
good luck!Www@QuestionHome@Com

If you only have 20 parts and that is the final number, just choose the 20 kids you think will bring the most to the show!. Email or call the other 20 and let them know that you are really sorry, but you can only include 20 people in the show!. Encourage them to audition for the next show!.

If you really don't want to do that, see if you can find some of them parts in the ensemble or chorus!Www@QuestionHome@Com

What you can do is have the 40 kids read the parts that they are trying out for and see which one reads it better!. Then make a list of the 20 kids that stand out and that read the play with emotionWww@QuestionHome@Com

don't pick the friend; pick the better actor!.
