Question: Performing Tennessee Williams' Suddenly, Last Summer!.!.!.!?
My Theatre Performance class is doing a series of one act plays by Tennessee Williams, and I am in the Suddenly Last Summer ensemble, playing Catherine Holly!. I figure she is quite a mixed up character, turned slightly crazy by the death of her cousin Sebastian, and frustrated that everyone thinks she's insane!. Can anyone help me with the characterisation of Catherine Holly!? It would be much appreciated, as this is my final Drama exam for Year 12!. =)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Elizabeth Taylor's performance in the film is one of her best!. Catherine has buried, very deeply, the memory of this horrific attack!. The ending as written was always edited or modified because it was too much - cannibalism!? She is being threatened with a lobotomy!. She was used by Sebastian as bait in order to satisfy his desires!. She is not just 'slightly crazy' but deeply disturbed and terrified at her situation!. How lucky you are to be portraying her! Tennessee always said that he wrote for the 'fragile people'!. His heroines are, in one way or another, surrogates for his sister Rose, who was institutionalized for life!. It was the great heartbreak of his life!. I don't know if this helps you at all, but I certainly wish you all the best, and break a leg! What a role!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
