Question: My mom said if I booked a role on a major TV show, she wouldn't let me have it!!?
Alright, so being an actress has been a dream of mine for a while now, I just love that feel of being on stage and changing characters- it's just amazing!. But I'm also interested in television shows!. So I asked my mom 'If I booked a major role on a TV show that was long-term and in Cali, would we just move out there!?'

And she says no!.

So I'm like, 'Okay, then what would we do!?'

And she's like 'I guess you wouldn't take the role then' and she was serious!.

This literally crushed me!. To me, that's like her saying she doesn't support me!. I understand that 'she loves me and everything' but she also knows how much I want this!. Why is she setting up times to get my headshots done when she doesn't want me to go anywhere with them!? I live in AZ, not far from Cali, where there isn't really any good entertainment companies, what am I supposed to do!?!

Please help me, I'm so upset!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It looks like mom is trying to be honest!. She supports you, but does not feel you are ready for stardom!. A few years and that can change!.
What have you done locally that makes you think you have a chance at National TV!?
Your attitude is most likely crushing her!. You are not respecting her life experience!. Will you be ready to drop everything and change your life in 20 years when you have a kid who has a dream!?
I think she is thinking family and you are thinking you!.
Good LuckWww@QuestionHome@Com

i get you!. my dad wouldn't support my dream, either!.

he told me to go to law school!

and i was voted best performer in high school!

ask your mom WHY she wants it that way!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

once she sees the money comin in she'll shut up apparently you can buy anything with moneyWww@QuestionHome@Com

Get over it!. If and when you do land a major role, you can re-start the conversation!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Like the other guy said, get over it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You can't just expect your mum to suddenly move to somewhere else just because you want to!. You have to think of it from her point of view too, not just yours!. She doesnt want to buy another house, get another job and start over, she probably doesnt have the money for it either! I see what you mean and I feel for you that your so upset and all, but since you have a headshot and im assuming a resume, just reason with her even if you don't agree and then ask if you can apply for an agent, it's perfect they'll get you auditions! :)

Hope all ends well!

Calm down!.

You can always persue your acting once you're 18!. I have to tell you, I've been in performing arts for 10 years, and most people who are "great" in highschool - don't make it in "real life!." Even kids who go into the arts in college don't always end up doing it as a career!. It's hard!. I'm sure your mom knows all this and is trying to protect you from the let down!.

The other poster is right - being on tv doesn't mean you could afford to live in LA!. It's not fair to ask her to uproot your whole family because you want to be an actress!.

Take a deep breath, and a few acting classes!. If you can't take hearing "no" from your mom, find new career!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Couple of things!. First, her "no" is not the end of the world!. You will be perfectly able to pursue a career in acting after you turn 18 or 21 depending on whether you attend college or not!. I recommend attending college by the way!. Second, landing a major role on TV is a very, very, very difficult thing to do and you, as amateur actor, not in any unions are exceedingly unlikely to be offered a major TV role anytime soon!.

For the sake of argument however, lets say that you were to book a role on a major TV show and that show was guaranteed to air for at least one season!. That's a few thousand dollars per week in salary at scale Screen Actors Guild rates!. I assure you once your mother saw the salary she would change her tune VERY quickly!. This scenario is purely a hypothetical however because all the kids who are out here in LA pursuing the dream with their parents blessing are all chasing that big paycheck and it's very elusive!. The sad reality is that 98% of Screen Actors Guild membership earns less than $5,000 per calender year as an actor!.

For adult actors that means years of day jobs while they hone their craft and pound the pavement at auditions to build their resume!. The goal is to turn themselves into marketable actors so that the executives who do the hiring for major TV roles see the value in greenlighting their (or your) addition to the cast!. It's a major financial commitment to put on new TV shows and you'll notice that the majority of actors in the main roles have years of former TV work on their resumes before they got their shot!. Research actors from your favorite shows or any TV shows on IMDB!.

So take a breath and stop putting the cart before the horse!. There is simply nothing to get upset over because you haven't crossed the bridge yet!. Chances are your mom knows this but you aren't hearing her in the right context!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

well if she's booking headshots etc then she obviously does support you

I think she's probably just imagining you being on TV and everyone in the country looking at you!.!.!. it'd freak any mother out >_<

Try talking about it later once she's had some time to get used to the idea, but don't bring it up all the time or she'll get stubborn and then she'll never let you do it!.

Maybe you could just leave it until something like that actually happens!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
