A fiddler on a roof is in a very precarious position!. He plays his music happily, but he is constantly aware that he could fall at any time!. It is this hope for happiness combined with an awareness of how easily happiness can turn to sorrow that propels the story of Fiddler on the Roof!. The residents of Anatevka are particularly aware that they are surrounded by many who are intolerant of their very existence!. Violent progroms could occur at any moment!. Despite this, they must live their lives according to their beliefs!. Their traditions and faith give them the ability to persevere, and even find happiness, in spite of the hardships they endure!. The traditions of these people are also in a precarious state!. The younger generation may or may not adhere to the ways of their parents!. Tevye is knocked off balance each time one of his daughters veers from the traditions he's always lived by, but manages to "climb back on the roof" again!. The ending of the movie is sad, as it must be when people are forced to leave their homes because of intolerance!. Still, the audience knows that those Jews who remained in Russia, Poland, Germany, and other countries would eventually endure the horrors of the Holocaust!. We are left hopeful that these former residents of Anatevka will find in America the chance for a more secure happiness!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
