It is disappointing to not be cast but your teacher would not have asked you to assist him if he did not believe you were a capable person!. You will basically be his right arm and he most likely will be depending on you for a lot!. He wouldn't ask just anyone because it is not worth his while to have someone assisting him that doesn't know what they are doing!.

To answer your question you can't really say being SM is better then having a part!. Some people will say it is better and some will say it is worse!. If the only other option is to have nothing to do with the play then it is worth your while!. Working directly with him will give you an insight into how he works and what he looks for that will give you an advantage at future auditions!. I would say take the position and thank him for thinking of you and pay a ton of attention to everything while doing it!. You have a great opportunity if you use it wisely!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Better or worse is totally subjective!. I'm a professional stage manager and I have absolutely no desire to be on stage - and most of the actors I work with have no desire to be a stage manager! What I would say is that if you take on the job you'll gain a new appreciation for the backstage team and you'll learn to see theatre from a very different angle, which will only help you when it comes to other productions!. A young actor I'm working with at the moment is currently in an assistant stage manager's job and he's finding it very interesting - and it will make him a much better actor to work with!. I say do it - but I'm a stage manager so I would say that!Www@QuestionHome@Com

In all honesty it doesn't seem like it's better for you!. You wanted to be on stage and you're not, but that's ok!. I think that you should take the position; it gives you chance to see how other actors perform and may help with future auditions!. I wouldn't say any part is better than another part it's really an individual feeling!. I know at college some people train to become stage managers!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Ty could not be more wrong!. Stage managers and assistant stage managers are extremely important!. In the professional theatre, they are often paid more than actors!.

It's natural to be disappointed about not getting a role you tried out for!. But you might be surprised by how much you enjoy participating in the production in a different capacity!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

ok what would make you happier being in front of the audience being clapped for or behind the stage wishing you were out front!.

While stage manager is very important!.!.!.!.For a freebie if I were offered stage manager it would be a slap in the face!.!.!. I would respectfully decline!. If it were a paid position I would take it in a heart beat!.

no it is not better than having a part in the play, as an ASM you do next to nothing except do what ever the SM wants you to do!. when a theatre teacher wants you to be an ASM that means they like you but you just aren't good enough to be an actorWww@QuestionHome@Com

i LOVED being a stage manager!. seriously!. it's like you're in a position of authority, there's an amazing vibrancy backstage that's just hard to explain, you feel a part of everything, i really, really loved it!. In college i continued to volunteer to be stage manger for shows when i had the time!. And i have had parts on stage!. while there some thrill in taking on a role, i really, really loved being backstage!. I've also done lighting and sound which was also a blast!.

but if you really feel like it's a throw away job or something, maybe you wouldn't enjoy it, i don't know!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Stage manager and actor are two completely different things!. It's like the difference between someone who designs cars and someone who races them!. They're both important, but they are very different!.
Stage manager or stage manager assistant is a very complicated job - and not everyone can do it!. You have to be organized, you have to be able to think out of the box, and you have to be consistent!.
That said, if your heart is set on having an on-stage role, then talk to your teacher and ask what HIS opinion was (not he said someone else said !.!. that's third hand information) and if HE doesn't think you are the best person for that role, ask if there is another role you could try out for, or if you could understudy!.
People who do stage management aren't usually the kind of people who do on-stage acting because they are so very different!. It's like the person who writes a play and the person who writes it - the one who writes it will likely never stand up in public and say a single word, because that isn't the way they express themselves!. By the same token, the person who acts on-stage will likely never write a play, because they don't have the imagination to carry a whole story in their heads and to create the characters to act it out!.
That said, whichever way you go - enjoy it, learn what you can from it, and remember, there's always another audition around the corner!.
Now go break a leg!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
