SAG and Aftra is a catch 22!. Once your join either you can no longer do any non union work legally!. The only way to get experience is to work but you can't because SAG productions only want to hire experienced actors!.

Don't be in a hurry to join SAG, work your tail off and when the time is right you will know it!. Besides if your not SAG and you get booked on a SAG production, say a commercial and the part is speaking, SAG will allow you to work under a Taft Hartley waiver!. Then you have 30 days to join SAG!. During the 30 days you can work as much as you can on both union and non union work!. After that you are a must join and need to pay the 1400 bucks to work on any other SAG production!. Which could possible spoil your chances if you book a nice one day U5 that pays only 734!.

The thing about being part of SAG is a) you have to pay dues to be part of the union and b) you can't do non-union work once you've joined!.
Especially if you don't live in someplace like LA or New York where there's lots of Union work, you may be shooting yourself in the foot by joining the union too soon!.

Best thing to do- get as much work as you can and aspire to be "SAG eligible"!. From there you can decide if its worth it to actually join the union or not!.
