I'm no expert on literature but I would take that quote to mean that anyone who thinks themselves better than they are will eventually be brought down to size!? I would relate this to Oedipus Rex because in the beginning of the play Oedipus is king and considers himself some pure, untarnished dispenser of justice!. He swears to find and punish Laius' killer!. His pride and vanity are crushed by the realization that he's killed his father, married his mother, and fathered his sibling!. He gouges out his eyes and exiles himself from Thebes, and so on!. His fall is greater because he thought himself so high!. In Sophocles' words "until from his high crest headlong he plummets to the dust of hope"!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
