Hey disneylove,

You already know my stance on acting classes!. Why would you learn from someone who hasn't achieved success through the things that they teach!? You wouldn't learn surgery from a med school dropout!. Why learn from actors who are actually teachers!? If they really knew the best acting techniques, then they'd be making their livings as actors and not as teachers!. (http://celebsystem!.com/cgi-bin/articles!.!.!.!.

Now there are, of course, teachers out there who do act as well as teach, but they'll tell you the same things!. As a matter of fact, last year, a friend of mine was enrolled at the New York Film Academy (she doesn't recommend it, nor do any of her old classmates, despite its esteem as a screen acting school), and one of her teachers was an example of a working actress who was making ends meet in her down-time as a teacher!.

She herself said that actual talent can't be taught, AND as soon as she becomes successful as an actress, she's quitting her teaching job, because she doesn't need it anymore!.

So you can take that as you will!. And though I don't really think acting classes are bad, I don't think that they're good, and at best, they're a waste of time (that could be spent auditioning and working)!.

The one good thing that my friend said came from acting school was the experience that she got working on film sets and the audition-free credits and footage she got for her résumé and reel!.

As for your question about experience in plays, it depends on whether your aspirations are for film or stage acting!.

If you want to be a movie actress, your stage experience wouldn't matter anyway!. In fact, it might even hurt since film and theatre acting are so different!. (http://celebsystem!.com/cgi-bin/articles!.!.!.!.

The best way to get involved in more acting is to get out there and try to audition for some things in your area!. Study the performances of prominent actresses, buy some books for private study, and just keep practicing!.

But if you really want to start an acting career, you'll either need to move to Los Angeles for film (http://celebsystem!.com/cgi-bin/articles!.!.!.!. or New York for theatre!.

Anyway, I hope you don't give up on your dream!. It's never too late to get started!. Harrison Ford was 35 when he got into Star Wars!. And everybody starts out unexperienced, you've gotta begin some where!. :-)

Good luck!

Wow, who told you acting classes don't help and are bad!? That's insane!. While it's true that there are some bad teachers out there who can make your class experience not quite as helpful as it could be it's not the classes themselves!. This is why it's good to research schools and audit classes, if you can, and not go to places like John Robert Powers and Barbizon!.

Are there community theatres in your area!? Check into those!. also, churces will sometimes put on productions as well!. Look for any opportunity you can!.

If you enjoy the classes, keep taking them!. Becoming an actor doesn't happen overnight, especially if you live in an area that doesn't offer many opportunities!. It sounds like your doing the best you can!. Keep at it and just have fun!

** Just a note, for beginning actors, it's not really helpful to do monologue work etc on your own, because you're not at level to really ellicit your best performance!. That's why you need an outside director and where the teachers come in!. After a certain amount of training, you'll learn how to analyze scripts and develop characters on your own!. However, you CAN read plays!. Read all the plays you can get your hands on!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

try doing monologues!.
monologues are little scripts, you can practice you're acting with that!.
In my school there's a drama club and a yearly play production so if you're school has any of those clubs relating to drama or acting, try joining it!. also there's courses, classes and other things you can participate in outside of school!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Not sure where you are from but in most small cities they have local theatre!. Try out for their plays and move up!. also there is several places to volunteer for fashion shows that is public appearances and confidence building!. If you are taking classes it should be at a private acting school which should be training you for a production at the end of the season as well!. Contact local agents in your area in regard to free workshops as well!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Analyse yourself!. Look, personality, style etc!. After you figure out who you are watch movies and TV and try to see actors who are like you see yourself!. Then practice imitating them!. Keep developing one character!. Lover, criminal, hooker whatever!. Get good at it!. Then get a photographer and stylist to create a photo portfolio of your actor self!. Don't vary!. After you are satisfied with the new you!. Send the portfolio to casting agencies everywhere!. When a part comes up that requires your look you have a chance to get the part!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
