Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Rent- No, I wouldn't suggest it for 12 year olds!. It deals with many topics that you will then have to talk to your kids about (gay, lesbian, AIDS, strip clubs, and sex)
[title of show] - no for 12 year olds- It says the f word around 10 times
Billy Elliot- I don't know much about it
Chicago- I wouldn't take a 12 year old to see it
Cirque Dreams- Yes, It's appropriate for all ages
Gypsy- Amazing show, but Gypsy does become a stripper!. I wouldn't take my 13 year old sister to see it with me!.
In The Heights- I haven't seen it yet, but I've heard it was really good!. Once again I wouldn't take my sister to see it
Jersey Boys- It also has foul language in it
Mamma Mia- Really cute, I would suggest it
Shrek- My younger brother (11) really wants to see it, it would be appropriate and with the cast, you won't be disappointed by the amount of talent!
South Pacific- I don't think I would take my sis!. It's an older show, but is really good
The Phantom of the Opera- It's heavy and definitely has the opera influence in it!. I took my sister and I think she was a little bit bored during it!.!.

In addition to Cirque and Shrek, you might want to look into any of the Disney shows (Lion King, Mary Poppins, or Little Mermaid)!. They are all great shows for all ages and I loved them all!. The costumes and talent is amazing!. I really loved Mary Poppins (sat in the balcony and she rises up above the audience which is really cool!)!. I would also suggest Legally Blonde!. My sister (13) and brother (11) both really love the whole show and saw it more than once while we were in New York City last week!.

Hopefully I helped a little bit and enjoy whatever show you end up seeing!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Hope your are going before Sept!. 7th!. That will be Rent's last performance on Broadway!.
If your daughter is mature enough and knowledgeable about the Gay and AIDS issues, Rent is a great musical!. If you object to having your daughter see such a musical and you are uncomfortable with taking her then stay away!.
If I were taking a 12 year old and have not seen any of the mentioned musicals I would see Mamma Mia or Phantom of the Opera!.
Mamma Mia is a good story(chick flick type), with outstanding music!.
The Phantom is a Broadway classic!. Can't loose with either!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well I've only seen one of the musicals you've listed!. I've seen Jersey Boys and I'm about the age of your daughter!. It was phenomenal! But I think she should only see it if she's mature!. It has bad language (a lot of it), and a bit of sexual remarks!. I've also seen the movie Mamma Mia, and I would give it the same comments except for the use of bad language!. But Mamma Mia would be the best!. I've heard the broadway production was amazing!.

Good luck, hope this helps!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I would personally say no!. It deals with a lot of heavy content (AIDS, dying, drug use!.!.!.) and although it's a great show I don't know if it's approriate!.

I would either go see Billy Elliot or Mamma Mia!. Both are great shows that are maybe a bit better for her age!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

I've seen most of them and I would steer toward Cirque, Shrek, Mama Mia, South Pacific, Phantom!. Language isn't an issue in any of these!.

Have a great time!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Absolutely! My daughter saw it at ten and loved it! You shouldn't miss it!. See it while you can!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
