I've never directed a play but I've done alot of work both behind and in front of the curtain!. ~ Make sure it's legal, you'll get sued for alot of money and get screwed!. Buy the rights to the play before you start whatsoever!. Casting - Have all your assistant directors and vocal coaches with you!. This can help you with the decisions ~ Make sure there is a notepad with everyone helping with the decisions!. Write out names and notes so you can remember who was who!. ~ Have everyone star who they think should go to call backs!. This makes it easier for everyone to agree and disagree Prep!. - Meet up with the set, costume, and lighting designer to see the idea that your going for in the play!. Say the effects that your going for in different parts of the script!. Discuss transitions between set and costume changes!. ~ Hire someone to deal with publicity, including brocheres and the advertisments ~ BUDGET, BUDGET, BUDGET! How much money do you have!? Can you make a deal about advertisements!? Where will your designers shop for raw materials and can you recycle!? It's all in the planning before the play!. That's where you'll see the benefit of all the extra effort you put in!. Tips: Always make sure that you know the script and that you know a good description and understanding of the characters!. Always know that they can't do the play with out you, you are the backbone!. your the one in charge!.but dont go overboard!. Make sure whenever your actors preform a scene in front of you!.!.!.take notes!
