Sounds to me like they are excluding, or alluding to excluding, any who aren't recognized as former/current principals, in stating they aren't looking for novices!. I think you can assume they want Equity associated cast!.

It's legal certainly, though not strictly moral, but it sounds like a situation where they won't 'Invite" specific Principals, but want only principals to audition!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

IT MEANS THAT THE SHOW HAS A SPECIAL CONTRACT WITH EQUITY WHERE ALL THE ACTOR DO NOT HAVE TO BE IN THE ACTORS EQUITY UNION - BUT THE PRINCIPALS DO - OR A LEAST THIS CHARACTER WILL BE IN EQUITY!. THERE IS A GREAT VARIETY IN CONTRACTS IN SMALLER THEATERS - SO THAT SMALLER PRODUCTIONS ( USUALLY OUTSIDE OF NY) CAN AFFORD TO HIRE AN ACTOR WHO MAY HAVE SOME TERRIFIC CREDITS AND MAY HAVE A FOLLOWING!. THAT WAY AN UNION ACTOR CAN DO THIS SMALLER PRODUCTION WITHOUT GETTING IN TROUBLE WITH EQUITY AND NON UNION ACTORS GET TO WORK WITH A PRO!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
