Do you think they would let me be Joseph despite the fact that I'm black!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Considering that the characters in the story are supposed to be from the Middle East/Egypt, having a black Joseph is probably more historically accurate than having a blond-haired blue-eyed one!. If you are the best person for the role, this should not be a barrier to you at all, particularly with a school musical!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

They should, if you're the best person for the part! In the film version (with Donny Osmond as Joseph) one of the brothers is black, and Billy Elliot on the West End is completely "colour-blind" in their casting of the boys to play Billy - they've had at least one black and one Asian Billy recently!. And Lea Salonga (the original Kim in Miss Saigon) went on to play Eponine on the West End, so there's precedent of the highest rank on your side!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I say go for it!. If you are the best for the role, they should cast you!. Robert Guillaume toured in Phantom of the Opera, Audra McDonald (love her!) was in the tour of Secret Garden and played Carrie in Carousel (and won a Tony for it)!. Terrence Howard and Anika Noni played the leads in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof!. Francis Jue (am Asian man) played Peter Pan, a role usually reserved for small white women!. There are many more examples I'm sure, but these are just a few for you to consider :-)

I think if you are the most talented guy who auditions and you knock you audition out of the park, then you may have a good shot!. The trick is you have to actually be good!. OK, you have to be great!.

In your case, I might actually suggest something I never suggest!. You may want to sing Close Every Door and sing it right into their hearts and souls!. You have to show them that you are Joseph!. Normally I advise against singing from the show, but in your case they may not be able to see you as Joseph so you may have to show them!.

good luck,

Although being black conflicts with the history of the story, I don't think it is so relevent to the message that anyone would care!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
