I think she meant that in front of the public eye she was this or that!. She was all glamorous, and what not, but when she had time to herself she grounded herself, became realistic about life, and found her personality; the private side that she didn't show anyone!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think answer # 1 is spot on, and # 2 offers valid thoughts regarding the woman Marilyn was, or wanted to be!.

Essentially a naive child, even until her death; thrown, or dragged into her persona, she dealt with it for as long as she could tolerate it!. I can't say I'd call her amazing, but certainly the above quote relates to her finally being very well aware of a public and private side, which for her, was a very conflicting life!.

The quote might be an original in the words she used, but certainly in context Most or all of us feel the same way!. Isolation when imposed can be a prison; when chosen it can be a blessing!. In Norma Jeans case she had precious little of the "alone", which is essentially why she isn't still with us!.

I do agree, to a degree, that the public may not have ever known Norma Jean, but that mattered little to her keepers!. Those most close who may have known where all the skeletons were, should include Joe DiMaggio!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

being famous destroys who you are!. so many people want fame, for many reasons, but i really think it can come down to not liking who they are/how they see themselves!. meaning people portray a different person!. marilyn dyed her hair, had plastic surgery, and came across very specifically in public but possibly felt like she had to!. she had created marilyn monroe but she was really just norma jean on the inside!.!.!.and i think towards the end she probably missed the simplicity of being her once!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I agree with Brianne's interpretation of that quote!. Well done!. But Marilyn had many good quotes, for example:

"A career is wonderful, but you can't curl up with it on a cold night!. "

"Dogs never bite me!. Just humans!."

Marilyn was amazing, wasn't she!? The pity is that many people know her name, but few know much about her!. She was wonderful!. I wish I had known her!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Marilyn Monroe was a persona she created and Norma Jean Baker is who she truly was when she turned off Marilyn!.

And yes, when she wasn't loaded she could turn it off and on like a light switch!Www@QuestionHome@Com
