Question: Submitting a play to a playhouse!?
Do you have to query before sending in the whole play!? And how long does it typically take them to respond!? I'm almost done with my play and I want to send it to these playhouses in New York!. And another thing can you send your play to more then one playhouse at a time or do you have to wait until one turns it down before submitting it to another one!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Each publisher has different demands!. Some don't accept unsolicited manuscripts!. Some prefer plays that have been produced!. Some of them will not consider plays that are simultaneously submitted to other publishers!. Luckily, unlike many book publishers, most play publishers have a website that tells you if they will accept unsolicited manuscripts and how to submit them!. The rule of thumb, however, is that if you are submitting your play to more than one play publisher, you tell them that in your query letter!.

Study their requirements!. You will get nowhere if you ignore them!. They get hundreds of manuscripts a year and it aggravates them to have their submission requirements ignored!. In fact, that's a sure way to have your play sent back to you unread!.

I have written several plays which I have produced as a drama teacher!. I tried submitting one to Dramatist Play Service which was stupid because it was a one act children's play!. They publish Sam Shepherd!. They're not interested in the type of plays I write (those appropriate for junior high and high school), but they were very kind and recommended a publisher that they thought would be interested in my work!.

I've included the websites of several play services below so you can research their submission requirements!. BTW, SASA means stamped, self-addressed envelope!. Most publishers require that IF you want your play back!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

When you are a writer your show must go through workshop performances!. That allows you to see it performed on stage and allows you as the writer a chance to change your material!. If you send it to anyone in New York they'll laugh at you!. I would suggest looking into Dayton Playhouse!. Who does a festival called future fest where they put on new productions!. It is a great thing to look into! YOU MUST THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU"RE DOING, BEFORE YOU DO IT!!!Www@QuestionHome@Com
