How to get discovered!?

You have to POSITION yourself to get discovered!.

By that I mean:

1!. Start training and don't stop no matter how good you think you are or how good others tell you you are!.
2!. Study the industry!. Find out how it works!. Find out who casts what, what agents look for in an actor, what the unions do, what the current issues are in the industry, etc!.
3!. Figure out what your type is!.
4!. Learn basic business, networking and self-promotional skills!.
5!. Learn how to audition!. Auditioning and acting on set are two different beasts!.
6!. Surround yourself with people who are already doing what you want and not with people who are trying to get what you want!.
7!. Talk to both working actors, who are making a living from acting as well as to aspiring actors who have been talking a lot over the past couple of years, haven't done very much, still don't have an agent and aren't taking classes and who are always making excuses for why they are not further along in their careers!. You can learn from both groups! From one you learn what to do!. From the other, you will learn how NOT to be!.
8!. Stay curious and never ever think you know it all!. Be humble!.
9!. Once you start to achieve some success, help others who are in the same position you were once!. You'll see that it will pay off!.
10!. At some point during all this you should ask yourself (and be honest) if you really, honestly and truly have the passion for acting to DO WHAT IS NECESSARY to succeed!.

Once you do those things regularly, you will start to intuitively know how to position yourself to be discovered!.

I conducted an interview with a Hollywood acting coach Bernard Hiller who said that, "If you let anything at all stop you from becoming an actor, that simply means that it's not for you!." That's why point number 10 is so important, because this is hard work and if you don't have passion, true desire and motivation, you won't go very far!.

Forget this idea of being "discovered"!. You have to make it happen!. Agents don't go out searching for new talent on the streets!. They don't need to!. Legit agents get hundreds of submissions per day from aspiring actors with professional headshots and resumes a mile long with solid training and experience!. They get post cards from aspiring actors marketing their upcoming production/premier/one man-show/ showcase/webseries/etc, so the agent can see the actor in action!.

An agent selects an actor to represent based on their look ("type"), talent and basically whether they think this actor will be able to book jobs (ie!. make them money! Remember, an agent only gets paid when their actor gets paid)!. Agents don't care if acting is your passion, you have to be able to deliver!.

So!. You don't start with an agent!. As for preparation, remember that resume I mentioned above with all the training and experience!? You start building that!. Get into some classes asap!. Look into your local community theatres and go to their next audition!. Look at the bulletin board of the film department of your local university for student filmmakers (MFA ideally) who are looking for actors for their shorts!.
Keep doing this!. Keep training!. Keep auditioning!. Research the business on your own - there are tons of books out there on the business of acting, go to your bookstore or library and spend the day reading!.

You know that acting (as a profession, and even sometimes amateur) is a highly competitive field!. Many people don't make it!. As for being discovered!.!.!.well, you have to put in the hard work and time and discover yourself!.

You'll need a headshot and resume of your credits!. You can check online or in the phonebook for agencies, but you'll likely need to move to New York or Los Angeles to hit it big!.

How much experience do you have now!? Regardless of your age, start auditioning for local plays or commercials!. You'll get experience, make friends and contacts, and learn about how to conduct yourself professionally!. Amateur plays may or may not pay, but you eventually want to get to paying work!. Whatever you get, try to get as much exposure as possible (tell your friends, family, strangers)!.

As you get more experience and become more professional, you'll want to invite agents to see you perform!.
