Question: What is a good song for a school audition!?
I want to join this summer theatre program and they require a monologue and a song audition in order to select the few they chose!. I've already decided I'm doing one of Lady MacBeth monologues for that part of it but I can't decide what song to do!. Its between the following:
Popular from Wicked
Hopelessly Devoted to you from Grease
Music of the Night from Phantom of the Opera
Which one do you think will impress them the most!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

To be honest, I wouldn't do any of those songs - they're all overdone and you'll just be one of the crowd!. Do some homework, go to the library and get out cast recordings of other shows and try to find a song that you like, that suits your voice type and that you can sing well!. Stay away from Wicked, Phantom, Hairspray, Les Mis, RENT, Legally Blonde and anything else that's big on Broadway at the moment - and above all, avoid High School Musical! Look at songs by Cole Porter, Cy Coleman, Kander and Ebb (but don't sing All That Jazz or Cabaret!), Rogers and Hammerstein, Lerner and Loewe!. Sondheim has also written some glorious songs which can show off your voice very well - if you can nail it, "Not Getting Married Today" (from Company) is a fantastic audition song because it makes you look very good - just make sure you can nail it because it is a little tricky! "Broadway Baby" (from Follies) is a lovely song, or "I Know Things Now" from Into The Woods!. I guess what I'm actually saying is think outside the square!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

well i don't know the monologue from macbeth, but if it's an upbeat monologue i would do popular!.!. if it's a serious monologue i would hopelessly devoted to you!.!. i don't think the phantom of the opera would be the best choice bc it's a really hard song to master and you don't want to impress them by doing the hardest song, but you do want to pick a good song for your voice that will show off your vocals!. Good Luck! :)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Of the three listed I'd say the Grease song is the least overdone, (you want to stay away from overdone songs)!. Though, it depends on your area and how big or small this summer program is!.
Ultimately, sing whatever shows off your voice the best- something you can put emotion into and that shows off your range and ability!.
I'd really, really try to stay away from "Popular", though!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well, since I'm not your drama teacher, I obviously can't say which one is going to be sure-fire as far as preference, so I'll just say how I would perceive the songs from that perspective:

Popular has a decent amount of more modern-style acting potential and, if you do the little spoken piece in between, could score you a few points; it also has a few bubbly movements to go alone with it, and the overall feeling of the piece is a bit more "comedy"-esque!. However, for the most part, it's not a very challenging piece to pull off in singing style, and you won't impress people in that regard!.

Hopelessly Devoted to You will carry a little bit of nostalgia with it (being a classic American piece) and has a bit more range than Popular, alongside being a little bit more of a serious piece, but there's not much to improvise on insofar as Body Language!. It carries more of a classically "romantic" feel with it!.

Music of the Night will probably be the most respectable piece - it's not the oldest, but it has a few years on it, and carries the most dramatic tone of the three!. If you're going for the image of a serious stage performer instead of a Broadway actress, this would probably be the piece for you - and it has the largest vocal range required, which may be good if you're trying to impress, or bad if you're not a great singer!. In my mind, its tone is closely related to "tragedy"!.

If I was going to pick, I'd choose Music of the Night, but, like the girl above me mentioned, you might want to pick a less-often performed piece!. However, oftentimes, the most-often performed pieces are done for a reason: they're the best!. Shakespeare is by no means new, but people continue to participate in his plays because, when done right, their potential for impact is like no other!.

All in all, if you pull of the songs with sufficient timing, singing and drama, you should have no trouble no matter what song you choose - I just happen to think Music of the Night offers the most potential in all aspects!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
