Sometimes it's the camera man's job to get the angles so no, you are not always looking at the camera!.

In the scene that you described, with the person standing behind you!.!.!.will that person also be on camera!? If so, than study your character to find out WHY she is not facing the person she is talking to!. Example: Is your character saying something decietful, is your character shy!.!.!. what is the reason she is not facing the person!?

If it has nothing to do with the plot, but you need to talk to the camera for 'technical reasons' than use what is called in acting your 'fourth wall'!. Which is to place in front of you the setting you are in!. Let's say for example, you are in a living room, well than what do you see on your 'fourth wall' in front of you!? Have it so detailed in your mind that you will see past the camera to your characters setting!.

Overall you need to focus on the INTENT of what your character is saying, and not how YOU look saying it!. Focus on your OBJECTION (as the character) for speaking!. If you are not imposing yourself onto the characters moment than you will have no worries as to whether you are looking awkward!.

You act!. which is to say you react to the stimuli of the scene completely and honestly!. if the person is behind you, use your imagination how you would do that in real life!. You don't always face the camera, you often try to ignore it and look at the other actor(s)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
