Question: Wicked the musical amazing or not!?!?!?!?
okay so I'm really into musical and recently say Wicked!. Now everybody I know is obsessed with it and thinks it amazing!. Now it is good but what annoys me is that where i live its like cool to like whicked since the traveling show just came and all these people are raving about how AMAZING it is when its clearly not the best!. I mean people are so ignorant and after seeing it assume its the best!. Personally I didn't think it was breath taking!. The Phantom of the Opera, Le Mis, and Spring Awakening are my favs!.!.!.what are yours and what do you think of wicked!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think it's a good play, but slightly overrated!. It is NOT the best play to ever hit Broadway, and it rather annoys me that all these little pre-teens come in to the T&A section saying "WICKED IS DA BEST B-WAY SHOW EVA!!!" when they haven't seen a single other show!.

Spring Awakening has to rank as one of my all-time favorite plays, though!. The lyrics are just so beautifully written!.!.!.some of the lines in the music just kill me!. It's like "How on Earth did you tap into your soul and pull that masterpiece out!?" I'm also a big Rodgers and Hammerstein fan - Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, Cinderella, etc!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well, don't bash people for liking a show just because it is popular!. I personally LOVE wicked!. It has a great story line, score, and a huge amount of talent!.
But, to prove to you that I'm not one of those 'horrible' wicked lovers, I also (practically) worship Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables!. Liking Wicked doesn't make people ignorant and to some people is clearly IS the best!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Theatre, like any of the performing arts, is not a matter of "what is best"!. It is not a sport where you keep score!. Depending on where you live, people may have not been exposed to a lot of theatre, and may have not had the opportunity to see as many productions as you have!. The fact that you did not like Wicked as much as they do does not mean they are ignorant!. I have seen Wicked both here in Chicago, and on Broadway (back when Chenoweth and Menzel were there) and can say that a lot of the beauty of that show was in the talent - I loved the Broadway version, and thought the Chicago version was merely OK!. The one thing it has brought to the theatre is that it has exposed a lot of people who probably would never go to see a musical to the theatre for the first time!. Will these people go see other shows and perhaps become more educated as a resul of this exposure!? Maybe!. But they still may think that "Wicked" is amazing!.
As far as your other choices, Le Mis was enjoyable, not familiar with Spring Awakening and I found Phantom, like every other Andrew Lloyd Webber musical to be incredibly pretentious, overstaged, overacted and in general, over produced!. Does that mean I think that you are ignorant because you like a show that I didn't!? Not at all - it merely means that we have different taste then I do!. It's great that you have had the exposure to different musicals, but that does not by any means make you the sole judge of what is good or bad for everyone to see, just as I can not judge that!. Enjoy the musicals you like for what they are, rather then criticizing other people's opinions!. Otherwise, you will end up looking like a real theatre snob!. Don't mistake matters of difference in taste as ignorance!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Visually I thought it was spectacular - sets, costumes, lighting, all the special effects were flawless and hugely impressive!. The show itself, I'm not such a big fan!. When I saw it I just felt it was a bit empty - not a lot behind the spectacle; the score is OK but it's not Sondheim!. As a musician I reckon you can't go past Sondheim; his music is complex, brilliantly clever, incredibly well-written and utterly unique, whereas while Wicked does have some big numbers and Elphaba is a difficult sing, it's musically not a patch on Sondheim!. I don't mind the whole Wicked fan-girl thing so long as they are educated - if they've seen other big shows and still think Wicked is the greatest thing ever, then they're perfectly entitled to their opinion and I respect them for that!. If they've never seen or even heard anything else and still think it's the best thing ever, then that annoys me!. I do own the OBC recording, and listen to it every now and then, but I much prefer Sondheim's shows, certain Lloyd Webber shows (I loathe Cats, don't mind Phantom and like Evita, Sunset Boulevard and Jesus Christ Superstar), the classics like Cole Porter and Gershwin's work, Les Mis (which I love and have been lucky enough to work on twice!), and Jason Robert Brown who is a new favourite!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
