Question: Help with choosing monologue!?
I'm auditioning for drama school and I need a monologue!. I am Irish and have an accent , I was wondering of I am expected to take a monologue from an Irish play!? I don't want to if I can avoid it as a lot of them I have found are drab and the contemporary plays are very inner-city and require that accent to make them work!. I have 2/3 monologues shortlisted but they are from American plays but can be neutral accent wise!. Could I get away with using one of these!? I'm 19 and female!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

As long as the monologue doesn't require you to have a specific accent (for character type), totally fine to do one that's not Irish!. What they're looking for is your versatility as an actor I believe!. Make it your own, do just do something run of the mill in your intrepretation (though don't be so *creative* that it doesn't make sense)!. Break a leg!Www@QuestionHome@Com

So long as a particular accent isn't ESSENTIAL to a monologue, I'd go ahead and use it, but if the accent is essential, and you don't have it or fake it, I'd stay away from it!. It SHOULDN'T matter, but some teacher might have a personal bias against using the "wrong accent!." No one would expect you to use an Irish play!. That would be just plain silly!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
