Are Brad and Janet supposed to be played with horrible and exaggerated acting!? I assume so, but I want to clarify!.

Yes Brad and Janet are playing caricatures, not characters!. they are meant to represent in an exaggerated fashion, a pair in love!. All the characters in RHPS are done this way!. The movie will stand in a class of it's own for all time!. It is not likely any movie will ever exceed the cult quality this one does!. Susan Sarandon has stated that she has not regretted her part in the film!. If fact, it is possible that her fame is directly related to RHPS and it's multi-generational success!. The movie was planned, from start to finish, to be outrageous in nature, from the theme, to the costumes, to the music, to the acting, to the sets!. Yet it is embedded with the most serious of themes and truths, and tid bits of advice!. "Don't dream it, be it!" says it all!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes, the term is "camp!." The whole thing is meant as a subculture satire of the superficial morality in 1950s movies, horror movies in particular!. For a handle on how far to go, compare the Inspector in RHPS to that donkey-orifice narrator in "Reefer Madness!."

Actually, Bostwick's and Sarandon's acting wasn't horrible at all; it was a spot-on spoof of that forced wholesomeness of '50s movie protagonists!. It takes real acting chops to be able to pull off bad acting!.
