Hey if your an adult!. You should start with good commercial shot!. That's the one usually of you smiling that's says "Hey, I can sell your product!" (well usually) It usually show you in friendly accessible light you are not usually making any particular statement except your friendly and probably great to work with!.
Usually in a photo shoot you get like two or three looks (sometimes more) If it were my first photo shoot I would focus on trying to get these three looks!. Commercial, theatrical (which is more of a serious or dramatic look), and business or character shot (depending on what type you are)!. A Business look is well -exactly that you in a business suit showing you mean busines-LOL!!. A character look is usually more specific but has broad range!. Sometimes its that funny goofy picture that commedians use to say "Hey look I'm a crazy guy!" others may be a more specific character like the nosey neighbor, or old grandma, ect!.
If you are a kid or a teen, don't spend too much money on a bunch shots, because your growing and your look will change as you get older and you may need to take photos more than once a year!. All you need is a good commercial head shot as i described above-that's it!
