Position:Home>Theater & Acting> What should I do to help start my singing/acting career?

Question:I need help. I just simply really don't know what to do to start my singing/acting career. I'm only 15 but I have to start planning now, or else I may not have my shot. I'm not the worlds best singer or actor but I've been dreaming of this since I was a baby! In fact I could be really bad at both, but I'm just unsure, I think I'm good, but then everyone else thinks there good too. I live in Salt Lake where Disney films a lot and I was thinking about auditioning for an upcoming movie, particuarly High School Musical 4 which probably wont start filming till next spring maybe even summer as the HSM 3 isn't out till October. Only problem is I have no experience. What should I do.

1. Training. Acting/Dancing/Singing classes are a good start. You start to get some talent under your belt, and grow your confidence. Plus, if after about a year of classes if you realize you really don't like it, it'll be easier for you to back out.

2. Experience. Do Community Theater, act in your school play, get in some student films, etc. You'll want to do as many productions as possible to have a great resume.

3. Agent. http://www.soyouwanna.com/site/syws/tale...

As you can see, you're going to need to spend at least two years (At the VERY least. Usually you'll need three to four.) building yourself up. You'll want to make sure this is what you really want to do before you start getting into this.

Also, you should NEVER have to pay for anything when it comes to getting an agent. If an agent tells you to take special classes from them or a website asks for a credit card number, that is a red flag that it is a scam. Some of the big scammers out there are: John Robert Powers, Millie Lewis, John Casablancas, Model Look, Barbizon.

Hope this helps you and I hope you go on to have a fantastic career. =)

PS. If you want some honest opinions, shoot some videos of you acting/singing/dancing on Youtube, and let people comment on them. You'll get a feel for if you have talent or not. (Trust me - If you suck, they'll tell you. And if you rock, they'll tell you. :D)

Depends on what kind of part you are looking for! If you want extra work, that should be fairly easy to get, but even then, in Disney, there is I would venture to say, even more competition than in other areas.

If you want extra work with them, then there are extra agencies you can sign up with as well as ones that cater specifically to Disney.

Otherwise, if you want to start really thinking about becoming a serious actress, then you will need to take on a different approach. Extra work can be part of that, but you will want to do much more.
That much more will mean training as an actress, going to school and learning a technique you will always be able to fall back on, learning what it means to be an actress. Talk to other actors both working and struggling and see what it is they are doing. You can learn what to do and what NOT to do.

You can have a look at this page on my site for new and aspiring actors, you will see a list of links to different pages that will help you understand and figure out what to do with regard to different aspects of starting an acting career.

You'll also see a list of some things you can do right away.

Also remember this. You will need also to learn some creative business skills. Why? Because especially in the Disney area, but with actors in general, the competition is so great. There are so, so, so many people out there who want to do what you are doing. You will need to create a different way of being noticed; something that other people don't do.
Think hard and long about it, because if you don't figure something out, your chances for success are very, very limited.

Good luck!
