It depends on whether you are doing the junior version or not. The Original production was written for a total of 6 and the parts were fairly equally divided between men and women but the junior version includes quite a large ensemble and while technically there are still only 6 leads many youth productions divide the songs up throughout the whole ensemble. The song each character sings is dependent on the director and musical director. The flexibility in that is part of the reason why this is becoming a popular show for youth groups to perform.
