West Side Story is the perfect musical.

Well, that completely depends on a person's personal taste. I personally enjoyed the message of Dave Clark's Time, and have been disappointed it never came to Broadway, or released for amateur productions.

For the theatre goer, it'd be Les Misérables. For the average person, its normally Phantom.

My personal favourites are Sunday in the Park With George, Sweeney Todd, and The Phantom of the Opera.
