Position:Home>Theater & Acting> How do you know what your calling is?

Question:I'm wondering because, I'm 20 years old, I'm not sure where I'm going at in life right at this moment. I'm not even in college yet because I'm still uncertain. I have a talent for acting, for helping/listening to others, especially kids. I get along really well with 5 year olds for some reason, lol. And I also have a knack for diagnosing illnesses since I read so much about diseases, treatments, and symptoms and such.

Ever since I was little though, I've always wanted to be famous. Especially an actress. I took some theatre classes in high school, and guess what, they thought I was really good. I won this foreign poem contest before. I had to memorize a poem in german and act it out. I remember I won judges' choice and first place cause they thought my performance showed the most emotion. I'm currently taking some improv classes downtown. I recently auditioned (first audition ever), for an improv group. They said they only call back people who they thought were really good

And they called me back. They said I'm very talented, but I'm ont there just quite yet. Whenever I'm off the stage, I'm thinking "Oh, I should've done that. That was bad", etc...I just want to be the best actress I can be and I'm always asking the teachers how I can improve and if they have any tips for me.

So, should I take that as a hint to go into theatre/acting? Or do you think my calling could be something else? For some reason, kids are drawn to me. I guess it's my outfits or something. But I've noticed they find it easy to talk to me. As for the medical field, I really get into diseases and finding out what causes them. I even have family members and friends sometimes asking what their symptoms could be from and stuff, It'scrazy.

Anyway, what do you think my calling could be? How did you know what your calling was? Thanks!

Never stop asking yourself that question.

I believe that soul searching is important and for this reason I have put together a guide with some questions that might help you to clarify your ideas. Here are some questions you might want to ask yourself with regard to your long-term acting goals.

Keep asking that question. When will you know it is the right thing? You won't have to choose it. IT will choose you. Acting will take you and make you do things, make you learn, make you go in that diretion. You will feel it. It will be a part of who you are.

I remember four years ago, I told myself that I wanted to be an actor. Then I did some soul searching, wrote my own life story, thought about what I really wanted in life. It didn't come to me right away, but I kept asking myself in different ways until I finally got the clarity I needed.
What I found was that it was actually wrong FOR ME to start thinking about acting as a career. It was more right to think about what I wanted my life to be about and how acting might help me to live the kind of life I want, how it might help me to achieve what I want in life, how it might be part of my life and in what way.

For this I would say that you are on the right track.
After a couple years, I came to the conclusion that is very strong inside of me that, it is not only acting I am interested in, but rather, acting is a very IMPORTANT part of what I want in my life. It will help me to achieve my goals and be what I want to become. I use acting in my work as a seminar leader, host, motivational speaker and in making corporate videos.
That clarity for me was extremely important to be able to put together a detailed plan to help me to get where I want to go.
And guess what? I'm almost there. I'm making serious progress.
I say this to let you know that figuring this out for yourself is a process.
Stay with it and don't stop until you FEEL IT.
That's really important, because like my football coach used to tell us, "You gotta love it."

Good luck!

Tony

Sounds like you should give acting a go, if you don't, you'll always wonder what if.... and if it doesn't work out you could always teach drama in schools or become a preschool teacher.

Edit: Whoops I forgot my calling; I don't know yet but I'm thinking its helping people
