The Great White Way is an old nickname from Broadway. As in "Broadway, the Great White Way." Sort of like New York City is "The Big Apple." It was named that because of all the spectacular lighted signs. Might have been Walter Winchell that coined the term. I'm almost positive it was one of the old Broadway newspaper columnists.
