I like (and saw) all three. I though Angela L's original sort of dotty old music hall Lovett was great fun - good contrast for when things turn ugly. And she *did* create the role. I liked the LuPone revival, but missed the show having some size to it. Still liked her and it though. And I thought the movie was great. Although I loved what she did with it and appreciated the depth, I wished for a little more power on the big notes from Bonham Carter - like on "mind you, I can hard-LY BLAME them."

Like NYC Director said, Lansbury did create the role. She was the first person I saw play Lovett, and even though I (personally, of course) enjoyed watching LuPone much more, many of the things she did were taken from Lansbury's original performance. None of the portrayls of Mrs. Lovett would be how they are today without her.

Lansbury was wonderful, but she pretty much dominates whatever role she plays. I'm looking forward to Judy Kaye in the touring production--should be interesting.
