Both movies used Shakespearean literature. The 1968 version was set in Old World and 1996 version was based more on modern times. The older version used swords as weapons and newer one used guns.
I personally did not like the newer version as well as the older one because I felt the noise level of the explosions and and gun fire made it hard to follow the old English verb age that I had to listen to carefully to understand.

Here's an idea - RENT THE MOVIES!!

You should really watch the movies but . . .

1) 1968 set at that time; 1996 more modern
2) 1996 is much more disturbing

I did not see the 1968 version but the 1996 version was set in modern day using the older English language.

Watch the movies. How easy is that? I should only have been so lucky in school to just watch a couple of movies and then be asked to compare and contrast the two!!!

Good luck with your "righting".
