Is your dream over because your are 18? No. Is it a very tall order, difficult, and potentially scary? Yes. No one can predict what will happen in your future or what your are capable of, not even you.

You cannot move to another city without money and resources. Work. Save money. Go to the city of your choice. Get a job. Read audition notices. Go to auditions. There are no easy answers to this. You say you're 18. That makes you an adult. If you want to save money and move to a larger city, save money and move to a larger city. If you want to do it, find a way to do it. I recommend college though.

Here is a rundown of what it costs to live in New York City. Perhaps others can tell you about other major cities -

Rent on a studio apartment in New York City can be from about $800 (out in deep Brooklyn or Queens) per month to three or four thousand per month in Manhattan. A landlord usually requires first month, last month, and one month security to rent an apartment. For young people, the often require a older co-signer and a credit report check. My electric is about $100-200 a month. My gas bill is about $30 a month. Busses and the subway are $2 each trip. I do not recommend owning a car in New York. Parking is a serious problem, garages are very expensive, and you do not need a car in New York anyway.

Start acting locally to gain experience. Community theater, school plays, etc.

It's not too late. Phil Hartman was in his 40's when he made the leap into acting and comedy.

The stories you told are the exception to the rule. There are thousands and thousands of wanna-be actors toiling away in both NYC and LA that do have the experience. Acting is an incredibly tough business. Great actors don't get parts they audition for every single day.

Join your local amateur dramatics society. They do a few major shows a year and will help you gain experience. It will also introduce you to new people who can help you with your ambition. Talk to the teachers at the amateur dramatics society, they can help you further. Then you can get an agent and start getting a few jobs.

Good luck, mate.

Remember, you're 18. You've got your whole life in front of you. You'll do it......

Don't forget the little people.

See if there's a small local theater group in your neighborhood. You might show up there and volunteer to do non-acting stuff. They always need people to help out as ushers, to work on sets, even sweeping and cleaning. It gets your foot in the door.

When they have auditions usually -anyone- can try out. If you are any good you'll get a role. If not, well be patient, wait for the next auditions.

You can't just -want- to act, you have to have talent. You have to jump through hoops and overcome obstacles. You have to pay your dues. That's just how it is. Despite what you see on Entertainment Tonight, there are no 'overnight sensations'. Most of these people started out in college or in small theater groups and worked up. The vast majority of them, like 99.9999%, never get past the local theater groups. They do it because they enjoy it, not because they are obsessively driven.

When I was in college, years ago, I was a speech/drama major for a while and I knew many aspiring actors. They all had great confidence in themselves and believed they were going to be famous someday. In the following years I saw one or two of them acting in local productions. None of them ever got a leading role in a movie or anything big like that.

easier way, but requires patience often ... just join an extras company ... like "extras only" here in Portland ... if they like you, you'll often get small roles .. but you'll always get that daily minimum wage check, and awesome free food all day .. and after a couple roles, you can get on the actors guild

Well its not going to happen overnight..btw...so if you think and really believe that you want to act...then go for it.
You have to ask yourself...What is so great about acting? Do i want to act to be famous or because I love it? You really ought to try a theater. You have to put yourself out there. and...no nothing is ever EVER too late to pursue! Get together with an acting coach...but if there is nothing around you...then you need to make that move or you can sit around with your thumb up your a** and be a sorry mope. What do you have to lose?? Sit down and write out the negatives and positives. But you will regret it if you never try.

Learning to communicate is a very important lesson. Acting is a form of communication. I would suggest going back to your classes and learning the basics of communication, like when to capitalize a person's name, and how to either spell, or use spell checker.
Living in Maine does not wash as an excuse. There is a vibrant community theater organization in that state.

Wanting to act, and being able to act are very differnt things.
If you are that dedicated to ACTING ( at 18?), then join your theater group at school, join the local community theater group, and try out for the roles.
Not everyone in the industry has been an "actor" since they were a kid. Try reading a little more about what you are trying to do. some people get acting jobs because they have a certain "look" that a director is seeking. <encounters at Schwann's comes to mind- or delivery truck drivers>
Make sure you are very clear about your goal, is it to be an actor? of a Star, or just Famous. All very different in the means and outcomes. Ego or love of the field?

What is the longest piece of literature you have memorized and can recite, with the proper emotion and body language action? Can you do Jabborwocky by Carroll? "Tree", by Joyce? "Hiawatha" by Longfellow? Longer pieces like Beowulf? It does take more than a pretty face, unless you are going to go to work in porn, well that takes more than a pretty face too, but not much I hear.
Do you know what stage directions are, they apply even in movies.
If you want to be an actor, then go be an actor. There are places where you live that will give you some of that experience. Go forth and DO!
k

You're dream's not shattered, but you do need to start acting like, now. Get involved in community theater, student films, etc.

Good luck!
