Question:Tomorrow our choir is having a concert- I have to sing a solo and a duet. The solo is really, really hard and I get dizzy and lightheaded after practicing it and as for the duet the other girl I'm singing it with hardly has practiced it and is continually messing up. The duet w/your unprepared partner is out of your control - if she messes up YOU just keep on going!

The solo you can control. Hopefully your teacher has discussed how important breathing at the right point in a song is. Have you worked this out for your solo? Do you know the exact point where you will take a breath? If you are light-headed after singing it I'm guessing you aren't breathing enough - or at the right spots. Try working on that and work on it over and over again 'til it's set in your mind.

Am sure you have been taught some vocal warm ups by the teacher. Do those ahead of time, for longer than you think is necessary. Just remember that the more effort you put into preparation for your solo, the easier it will be because you will feel more "in control" of the piece. Do some neck rolls and do that exercise where you tense up your whole body from head to foot and s-l-o-w-l-y release the muscles from head to foot.

Being nervous and scared out of your mind is normal - I have never performed in anything where I didn't say to myself the night before opening, "I must be out of my mind to do this!"

Everybody will be nervous tomorrow. You can (and hopefully WILL) be prepared more than anyone. Right? Of course right.

Knock 'em dead! You CAN do it! ;)

well there's a trick and it's to imagine your self all alone or just imagine that your still a kid singing in front of your mom

Whenever I have to perform and I get nervous I close my eyes and block everyone out for a moment until I relax. If you have a limited time to relax just stop breathing for a second and slowly let it out. Then, block everyone that's watching you from your mind and just focus on your performance.
