Position:Home>Theater & Acting> Pros and cons of going to college for an aspiring actress?

Question:To study what?
If to study acting (as in a drama school), then there are pros:
Learning loads of basic techniques to improve the talent you (hopefully) already have.
Working with like-minded people.
Getting the opportunity to work with professional actors and directors and learn from them.
Making contacts within the business.

Cons: Not being guaranteed any work afterwards - but then again, no one is guaranteed work after studying.

If you mean to study something else, then the cons are: Not studying something you are really interested in doing for a future career.
If you are interested in something else, then acting is not for you.

if i were you id go to college and get a degree in something useful (no offense) because going to college to study acting isnt going to do anything, either youll make it or you wont, college or no college

There are too many aspiring actresses.

Most of the actors/actresses with long term careers have attended college.

You need something to "fall back on".

It gives you more "life experience" from which to draw on while working in your chosen profession.

Carol Burnette has some standing scholarships for hopeful actresses at UCLA. You might look into that.

Pros: you'll have a degree to fall back on when your acting career fails

Cons: less time and energy to focus on acting

well, you gotta learn how to act somewhere...it just doesn't come to you...well not all of it.

on the other hand, you could be out there gathering experience in the first shitty movies that everyone goes through at the start of their acting careers.

What's the difference between the income of an aspiring actress and a large pizza? The pizza can feed 4 people.
Bottom line, so few people can make a living from acting. Getting an education will be with you long after your looks have gone.

The pro would be that a college degree would give you a sound back-up plan if the acting thing doesn't work out. I'm not trying to discourage you, but a very small percentage of people who want to act can actually support themselves doing it.

A degree would allow you to have a fallback plan.

The cons would be that it takes time and money to get a college degree that you could spend going to auditions or whatever.
