Position:Home>Theater & Acting> French Skit to perform...?

Question:Seeing as you are actors/actresses, I thought this would be the perfect place to ask this question. I have a French skit which I have to perform tomorrow in front of the class. It always takes me ages to memorize oral projects, especially in French. She gave us only today to do it. I can never get the lines in my head and always end up forgetting some of the words. What are some techniques I can do to keep the words in my head so I don't forget any?

When working on memorizing the lines, speak them out loud. This allows your brain to actually store the lines in different ways-- giving you a visual memory [how they look on the page], an aural memory [how the lines sound], and an oral [for lack of a better word] memory [how the words actually feel in your mouth]-- this last memory will also have a muscle memory component as well.

I like to take the script and read all the other lines into a tape recorder, pausing long enough where my own lines appear to allow me to speak them later. Then I can run the tape over and over, running lines even when I don't have someone else to hold script for me.

If all this fails and you still go up on a line-- ad lib. That's the beauty of live performance. Anything can and does happen. Just make sure you keep your ad lib within the story of the scene. If you flub a line and just keep going, believe me, no one will notice. They will think that's the way it was supposed to be.

Memorize them. There are no shortcuts.
